Yampa River: Steamboat Springs
Yampa River: Steamboat Springs — Fishing Report for April 24, 2026
Quick Stats
Flow: 1,270 CFS | Trend: Unknown | Fishability: Fair | Weather: Mostly Sunny, High 60°F
The Bite
The Yampa is running high and fast for late April — 1,270 CFS is more than four times the low end of the ideal range and well above what you'd expect in a typical pre-runoff window. With snowpack across the Yampa and White drainages sitting at just 21% of normal, this surge is likely driven by warm temperatures melting what little snowpack remains quickly rather than a prolonged melt season. The good news: at 1,270 CFS, the river is still below blowout threshold, and water temps are a surprisingly active 52°F — warmer than the seasonal norm and enough to keep fish feeding.
The bad news is that the main channel is moving too hard and too dirty for most presentations to be effective. The classic April BWO afternoon dry-fly fishing this stretch is known for is essentially off the table today — surface activity is unlikely with this much water pushing through, and the clarity won't support it. But fish don't stop eating just because conditions get rowdy. Browns and rainbows will be stacked in the soft water: inside bends, behind large boulders, in the slack current along cut banks, and in any protected eddy the river offers. These are the spots worth targeting.
Don't burn the day chasing the main current. Work the margins methodically, get your flies deep quickly, and expect short drifts. The warm afternoon temps and mostly sunny skies may push a few fish toward the surface edges later in the day, but nymphing structure is the reliable play from start to finish today.
What to Fish
- Pat's Rubber Legs #10-12 — anchor/point fly; gets you to the bottom fast in heavy water
- Pheasant Tail Nymph #18-20 — 14–18" above the anchor on a dropper; natural presentation in the slower seams
- Black Stonefly Nymph #14-16 — swap in for the Pheasant Tail in faster pocket water
- RS2 #20-22 — useful in the slowest, clearest edge water where fish have time to inspect
- Barr's Emerger BWO #20 — worth a shot in any protected flat if you spot a nose breaking the surface late afternoon
- Griffith's Gnat #18-20 — secondary option for any midge activity in slack water near midday
Tactics & Rigging
Rig a double-nymph setup with a Pat's Rubber Legs or weighted stonefly nymph on point and a Pheasant Tail or RS2 trailed 14–18" above it on a 6–8" tippet tag. Use 3X or 4X fluorocarbon to the anchor to handle the current load, and step down to 5X for the dropper. Add enough split shot above the anchor to get the rig ticking bottom within the first few feet of the drift — in 1,270 CFS, you'll need more weight than you think. A 9-foot indicator setup with a large yarn or foam indicator will help you read the drift in the chop.
Focus every cast on the soft water: the inside of every bend, the downstream shadow of any mid-channel boulder, and the narrow strip of slower current hugging the bank. Keep drifts short and controlled — long drifts in this flow will drag the rig out of the strike zone. Wade cautiously; the Yampa's freestone bottom is slippery at any flow, and at 1,270 CFS, footing demands full attention.
Access & Logistics
Rotary Park and the walking path along the river through town provide easy access to multiple stretches. Parking is straightforward and crowds are light for April. Stick to well-established entry points — high flows make off-trail bank access more hazardous than usual. Always verify current regulations with CPW before fishing, as some town sections may carry special rules.

Looking Ahead
Saturday brings a similar high of 60°F before rain showers move in Saturday night and linger through Sunday — that incoming precipitation could push flows higher or add color, so check the gauge before heading out this weekend. If Sunday's rain cools things down and flows begin to drop early next week, the Yampa could set up nicely for a brief pre-runoff BWO window before summer flows take over.
