Upper East River: Above Crested Butte — Fishing Report for April 24, 2026

Quick Stats

Flow: 203 CFS | Trend: Stable | Fishability: Poor | Weather: Sunny, High 44°F; snow showers likely Saturday night through Sunday

The Bite

This is an unusual April on the upper East River — and not entirely in a good way. With snowpack sitting at just 13% of normal basin-wide, the river is already pushing 203 CFS, a flow that typically doesn't arrive until late May or early June. That early melt pulse has the river running cold and slightly off-color, with water temps at 39°F — technically above freezing, but right at the floor of trout activity. Fish are lethargic in these conditions, holding deep and tight to structure, and they're not chasing anything aggressively.

The bigger limiting factor today is access. The road to Gothic and the upper meadow sections remains buried, and that country won't open up for weeks yet. The fishable water right now is limited to the lower end of this stretch, closest to Crested Butte, where you can actually get boots on the bank. Even there, manage expectations: this is cold, early-season water with no hatch activity to speak of and fish that need to be coaxed rather than caught.

The silver lining of a low-snow year is that runoff should be shorter and milder than normal — meaning this river could come into its prime window earlier than usual, potentially by mid-June rather than early July. But today is a grind, and the incoming snow showers this weekend will push water temps down further before things improve.

What to Fish

  • Pat's Rubber Legs, #8-10 (black/brown) — anchor fly, fished deep along the bottom
  • Copper John, #14-16 (red or copper) — trailed 14–16" behind the stonefly as a dropper
  • Hare's Ear Nymph, #14-16 — alternative dropper in slower, deeper pools
  • Zebra Midge, #20-22 (black/silver) — secondary dropper option in calmer tailouts
  • Egg pattern, #12-14 (peach or pink) — worth a try in deeper slots; early-season trout will opportunistically take these

Tactics & Rigging

Rig a double-nymph setup with the Pat's Rubber Legs as your point fly — it gets down fast in the higher flows and gives the rig the weight it needs. Trail a Copper John or Hare's Ear 14–16" above on a tag off the main tippet, or drop it 14" behind on a trailing tippet. Use 3X fluorocarbon to the anchor, stepping down to 4X or 5X for the dropper. Add enough split shot above the top fly to tick the bottom — in 39°F water, your flies need to be right in front of a fish's nose. Fish the deepest slots, undercut banks, and any slow water behind mid-channel boulders. Slow, drag-free drifts through these holding lies will outperform covering water quickly.

Access & Logistics

Only the lower portion of this section near Crested Butte is accessible today — the road toward Gothic is not passable. Parking near the Crested Butte town limits is your practical starting point. Dress for cold: air temps top out at 44°F and the wind off the Elk Mountains will make it feel colder. Snow showers are likely Saturday night and through Sunday, so today's sunny window is the better of the next several days to be out. Always verify current regulations with CPW before fishing, and note that some tributaries in this drainage have special rules protecting native Colorado River cutthroat trout — check before wading into any side streams.

Looking Ahead

The weekend snow will temporarily cool things down and may bump flows slightly as it melts — expect conditions to remain challenging through early next week. The low-snow year in the Gunnison basin suggests this river could open up meaningfully earlier than normal, so keep an eye on flows through May; if the runoff pulse stays modest, mid-June could see this stretch fishing well ahead of schedule.
