Blue River at Breckenridge — Fishing Report for April 24, 2026

Quick Stats

Flow: 10 CFS | Trend: Stable | Fishability: Fair | Weather: Sunny, High 52°F

The Bite

Spring has arrived at 9,000 feet, and the Blue River through Breckenridge is fishing in earnest for the first time since the ice locked things up. At 10 CFS, the creek is running at the low end of its ideal range — clear, manageable, and accessible along the town bike path. With a light snow year across the Colorado headwaters basin (snowpack sitting well below normal), runoff should be mild and relatively brief this spring, which is actually good news for this stretch. Expect an extended fishable window through May rather than the usual blowout scramble.

Today's full sunshine is a double-edged sword. The warm midday temps will fire up midge activity and pull fish toward the surface, but bright conditions on small, clear water mean fish will be spooky. The best action should materialize between 11 AM and 2 PM as the sun warms the water and midge clusters start appearing. Keep a low profile, approach pools from downstream, and make short, accurate casts — this creek rewards stealth. Water temps aren't available from the gauge today, but given overnight lows in the upper 20s and the current flow, expect cold water in the 36–40°F range. Fish will be deliberate, not aggressive.

Watch for a few early-season Little Black Stonefly adults crawling on streamside rocks and snow patches — their nymphs are active in the riffles and worth imitating. The first BWOs of the season are possible late afternoon if cloud cover builds, but don't count on it with today's forecast running mostly clear.

What to Fish

  • Zebra Midge #22 — Point fly in a two-nymph rig; let it ride the seam through the slower pools with a drag-free drift
  • RS2 (gray) #22 — Dropper 12–16" above the Zebra Midge; covers Baetis emerger and midge pupa activity simultaneously
  • Pheasant Tail #20 — Swap in when you're working riffles; the stonefly nymphs are active in faster water
  • Black Stonefly Nymph #16 — Anchor fly option for deeper runs with more current
  • Griffith's Gnat #20 — Worth trying as a single dry during peak midge activity (11 AM–2 PM) in the slower tailouts
  • Juju Baetis #22 — Late-afternoon option if overcast conditions develop and risers appear

Tactics & Rigging

Rig a two-nymph setup with a Black Stonefly Nymph #16 as your anchor on the point, and an RS2 or Zebra Midge #22 trailing 14–16" above it on a 6X fluorocarbon tag. Add a small strike indicator set 18–24" above the anchor — this is small water, so keep the whole rig compact. Fish the deeper slots along undercut banks and the slower water at pool tailouts, letting the rig settle and ride the current without drag. Short drifts of 3–5 feet are often all you'll get before the line pulls the flies off course.

If you see surface activity during the midday window, drop down to a single Griffith's Gnat on 6X and work the slower pools with a reach cast to maximize your drift. This creek is forgiving on technique but unforgiving on presentation — a dragging fly gets ignored. Bright sun today means fish will be holding tighter to structure and shade; focus on the shaded side of pools and any deeper pockets near boulders.

Access & Logistics

The town bike path provides easy access to most of the fishable water through Breckenridge. Parking is available at several trailheads along the path. Crowds should be light on a Friday in late April — the ski season is winding down and the summer crowds haven't arrived. Verify current regulations with CPW before fishing. Stop by Breckenridge Outfitters for flies, local intel, and to support the shops that keep these fisheries healthy.

Looking Ahead

Saturday brings a chance of snow showers (high 54°F) that could actually improve conditions — overcast skies suppress fish spookiness and can trigger stronger midge and early BWO activity. With snow continuing through the weekend, Sunday may be the sleeper day of the stretch if you don't mind fishing in light snow.
